I have wanted a 2" X 72" belt grinder for years, but didn't want to spend several thousand to buy one. I found a set of plans for a design that I really like (and didn't require machine tools like a mill and lathe to build), and it was time to build one! I TIG welded everything, but the designer of the unit provides a video showing him building it all with a MIG welder.

The motor is separate from the grinder body and has a V belt type wheel mounted to its output shaft and a belt goes from there to a shaft that also has a V B wheel mounted to 1 side and on the other side of this shaft is mounted either an 8" or 10" serrated rubber coated contact wheel, I am unsure of either of the 2 shaft sizes involved here.

A nice feature of this grinder is being able to tighten and loosen the belt by sliding the motor back and forth on the rail. It has a screw lock to tighten it in place. It also has the on / off button right where you need it (don't have to build a control box). Not the finest belt grinder, but then it only cost me about $150.00 to build. Cheers ...

The large disc sander on the side, when used in conjunction with a work table will smooth out curved contours as long as it can reach them. It will certainly true up straight edges such as spines, etc., in pretty quick order. I just use a carpenter's square to make sure the work table surface is 90 degrees to the disc.
