From this, you can conclude that end mills have a limited life in that they can be resharpened only a few time until their performance has been lost. It's pretty much a false economy to attempt sharpening the periphery of end mills under ¼" for that reason. Let me suggest something that will yield better mileage.

It was an elaborate affair with brass strips mounted on cylinders to generate the helx when the table was moved. It was neat, but a monumental PITA. End mill ends are not ground flat on the end.
