I'm not sure that it worked , but I remember seeing a guy on YouTube convert a little 5 hp lawn mower motor from vertical to horizontal by cutting grooves in some internal bearings for drainage, and making a manifold adapter that rotated the carb 90 degrees.

That would be a Vertical shaft. vertical = I up/ down, Horizontal = - sideways. More trouble than what it's worth to try and make that engine work. Keep your eye out for a 3.5 hp lawn edger Motor or any Horizontal Shaft motor. The edger type will be easier or a mower with the blades that roll in front of the mower.

The vertical engine has gotten a bad wrap these days because of its "supposedly" unfriendly geometry. Being vertical, the drive shaft obviously sticks down and is not the easiest to convert to be a horizontal engine.Most vertical engines get abandoned.
