It is a jig borer and milling machine. . Its a nice versatile little machine. Smaller than a Bridgeport but way more heavy duty than a drill press. I can be used for drilling boring or milling. Prefect for the home shop or small garage. Has bit in it and has a Sterling a three phase motor on it. You can easily change out the motor with a single phase.

Moore no. 3 and 1 1/2 jig borers have inverted V ways on the X axis..sort of like a lathe. So the only thing holding the table down is the weight of the table and to some extent the screw and nut assembly. Some older models such as original Linleys, and perhaps the Atlantic, do have dovetail ways and are more like a mill.

Bridgeport mill = no use jig. Maybe, as others have said, to hold the receiver in place. but if you can hold it down with clamps or other method, save yourself the money. The reason for jigs is for folks that don't/can't use a mill. So they resort to using a router with the jig. Download the drawings and then use the dimensions.

On Vertical Mills, the 4th Axis is frequently parallel to X or Y, and is laid down. On a Horizontal Mill, the 4th Axis is also parallel to X or Y, but it is standing up. Both methods work great, but the horizontal mill's standing 4th axis frequently has more clearance available since the work is never trapped between the table and the axis.

There was a time there were lots of shops in Detroit (home of DeVlieg) with lines of jig mills doing work such as die sets. The DeVlieg "spiromatic" positioning feature was advertised as being within .0002 for repeatability in the 1950's. The one on mine still works, and is .0000 75% of the time, .0001 the rest of the time.

I have had mine for close to ten years and love it. Since I am strapped for space and do mainly smaller stuff I don't have room or need for a Bridgeport.
