This method will only make slow powder.This is my method: Ball mill, soft wood charcoal (willow,balsa,eastern red ceder)are a must. Good potassium nitrate and sulfur. Powders should be ground together with non sparking media for ball mill ie 1/2″ lead balls until powder is like flower.

Charcoal is not hard to make. Get a metal gallon paint can from HD or Lowe. You can use the hard wood you use to cook with but it is slow burning. Willow, cotton wood and red cedar make good fast powder. You do need a way to mill the holy trinity together with out blowing up your house. I am lucky to have a place where I can mill 1.5 lbs at a time.

A few week ago I made a few 100 grains of a ping pong ball powder that works in a .38 Special. 50% ping pong ball by weight. The other 50% was ammonium nitrate/potassium nitrate/ammonium dichromate. Grained it 1.5mm x 1.5mm x 0.01 inch. The mix of metric & US is because the powder cutter is imported.

I'd like to add to the discussion here. I have 2 cold smoke generators and use both sawdust and pellets. I also make my own charcoal, both for cooking and for homemade cannon powder. I use a hand grinder to grind charcoal then it goes into the ball mill for final milling. Anyway, the same hand grinder works great for grinding pellets into dust.

To separate the mill dust from the ball mill media, put a round 20-mesh screen into the mouth of a bucket that is the right size to hold it. A screen-type colander that is about 20-mesh works, too. Josh, I am very interested to hear how you make out with your ball mill. I also have been planning to make one. I dig my own clay and have been using the slaking method. It does work, but, during a residency i did recently, I had access to a ball mill. I found you just cant beat it for making dry material for glazes and slips.
