The two main grinders I use in my finish shop, both use 3hp motors, 3 phase/220V, 1740RPM. One machine is used primarily with a 10" contact wheel, and that machine runs a 4" rubber covered drive wheel. The other runs a 6" aluminum drive wheel. The grinding wheel of choice for steel is aluminum oxide, even though the abrasive grains are softer than silicon carbide. Use silicon carbide for grinding non-ferrous materials, and cast iron. May sound contradictory, but that's what works. Cast iron doesn't grind well with aluminum oxide.

For the cutters, the 1/8" thick wheel is used for ¼", 3/8 LP ( Low Profile) and .325 pitch chain while the 3/16" thick wheel is used on standard 3/8 and .404 pitch chain. The most common size wheel I have seen over the years is a 10". Personally, when I do produce a blade with a hollow grind, I will most often use a 10" wheel, but because I demand that the grind be "right", and not one of those aforementioned perversions, the size wheel is determined by the thickness and width (edge to spine) of the blade.
