Recently I started using kool-mist with a mister I rigged up from an old RO filters remains. I like it for aluminum milling, but finding the right balance between coolant to lubricate and cool, and too much causing the chips to stick has been a little tough. You can use kool-mist for flood coolant I believe, but I haven't done that.

You can use WD40, vegetable oil, engine oil, Vaseline, KY jelly, etc. One thing that does not do very well is plain water.

So make sure whatever lubricant you use won't gum things up after a few years. I use spindle oil for the spindle and shaft bearings & other misc oilers, heavy/medium gear oil in the headstock and way oil for the ways. I imagine a decent synthetic motor oil would work fine too- many South Bends seem to prefer 0W or 10W Mobil 1 in the spindle.

I use my regular coolant/lubricant for machining and then throw the whole lot of finished parts in an ultrasonic cleaner (essential in any shop) with water and detergent (I am using "Simple Green").
