The GIB is lazer cut from 1/2" plate. I think that you would be better off getting a GIB unless you have a good method of cutting the parts from 1/2" plate. Most who are making knives really appreciate the veriable speed obtained by using a VFD and the multi wheel type grinder as oppossed to a Grizzly, Coote, Kalamazo or other 2 wheel grinder.

The motor shaft just dictates what pulley wheel you get. It doesnt affect the size of the wheel, just the ID. I use a 10" coote but have an 8" wheel as well. you can hollow grind with the smaller wheels but it takes a bit of practice and mostly for smaller or thinner blades: less than 1" wide. You will have one step down pulley on the motor. This will mean you need two belts. One from the motor to the shaft that is in the back and one for the main shaft. I used a strong hinge to mount the motor and a spring for tension. A back stand idler will have to be used for the small side of the shaft and one for the main contact wheel.

I've had a coote for a long time and have been very happy with it. I first had a 3/4 hp variable speed motor and it wasn't enough hp for me. I like to flat grind. Now I have a 1 1/2 hp and I'm happy. I think its 1750 RPM with a 1 to 1 pulley set up, but I'm going to change that to slow it down a bit.
