ادامه مطلبI now have a 1" strip sander that I use for a lot of sharpening, both knives, scissors, and yea some turning tools. Works much better than the small belt sander and it's much quicker to change belts. The one I got is from Lee Valley and you have to add the motor and switch. Went from those to my old Craftsman 6" 3450 rpm grinder with a gray wheel.

ادامه مطلبWhen I got my 8" grinder, the tool rests left a lot to be desired, especially when grinding lathe tools. This is what I made up for the fine grit wheel. The table is made from 1/2" steel, with the pivot bracket welded to the bottom. The whole thing is attached to the wheel guard with 1 1/2" angle iron, with a brace to the pedestal base.

I've found that when I'm reshaping a tool I can remove metal much faster than on a wheel, and it doesn't heat the metal as much.

ادامه مطلبI read Leonard Lee's sharpening book and the Lee Valley catalogues. From them I decided to try a 1" belt sander to replace the grinder. The tool rest on the 1" Delta belt sander cannot be used when grinding at the angles required for plane blades and chisels, so I bent a bit of angle iron to make a new tool rest for the belt sander.
ادامه مطلبThe General has 3/4 inch wheels and on mine the arbor is too short to change it to 1'' wheels. I use the Lee Valley rests on this grinder. The Delta came with 1'' wheels that I changed out for 1'' white aluminum oxides and i use the One Way systems on this grinder. I can't say one that one is better than the other but i like the wider wheels.

It is extremely simple, with the drive wheel connecting directly to the driveshaft of the motor, and the upper wheel being spring-loaded to keep tension on the belt.
ادامه مطلب1 inch belt sander Carol, I have a 1" belt sander and use it for Wood and metal. I haven't tried using a wolverine jig, but use a bunch of other stuff on it. I'm in the middle of making a KMG type sanding rig as I'm making more and more of my jigs and tools. My 1" is a POS, really noisy, but it works and for many thing much better than the grinder.
