Re: Grinding Carbide Tool Bits on a Bench Grinder. 09-07-2018, 10:51 PM. Carbide throws little to no spark. A green wheel is usually the right wheel for the job. But green wheels are a little bit softer and carbide is a little bit harder. The result is, the wheel breaks down quite a bit faster.

Looking for recommendations on a better grinding wheel for carbide on a bench grinder. Occasionally like to rework tips of endmills, make tiny carbide boring bars from busted endmills etc. Got a nice extended length bull nose endmill here now with corners chipped and id like to just grind off the top and turn it into a square endmill.

I have a green (silicon carbide) wheel on one end, solely for rough grinding brazed carbide lathe tools for taking off big chips or doing a major reshaping job. It sort of worked, but I never really liked using it. I have not used that wheel for decades, preferring a green wheel on a conventional bench grinder.
