Wow, there is a lot of old surface grinders around dirt cheap, it seems that it would be easier and better to fix up an existing grinder than build one. Those little KO Lee tool and cutter grinders will work ok as a surface grinder on small parts, those can be picked up for a couple hundred dollars.

Another thing is the X axis travel, it would be a PITA to hand crank it back and forth, maybe power drive on a higher speed could suffice... Sounds like an interesting project!

A "regular" surface grinder (the hard grinding wheel with a magnetic chuck and a cross-slide vice) is designed to make incredibly flat surfaces, but it won't help you do things like distal tapers unless you fuss with setting up the piece with parallels and shimming the piece, etc (and they aren't cheap machines).

One piece of equipment that I'd really like to add to my shop is a surface grinder. Unfortunately I may have to build one because in my area unlike the rest of you used surface grinders go for as much as new chinese ones, ie in the 4-10 thousand dollar range. So there are people like myself that may find articles like this useful.
