FRAY milling machine (Vert./Horizontal)?? Post by Wanna-Be » Wed Nov 30, 2005 12:42 am Well I finally found a mill that I could afford and seems to meet my home shop needs. It is a FRAY, US made but I really don't know much more about its age, etc. I would estimate it to be at least 40 years old and maybe even older.

Fray made milling machines from the late 1930's into the early 1950's. So I'm assuming that this machine was purchased new for the installation. At any rate. Between Mother Natures tirades with rain and cold weather and m work schedule...

First, the Fray milling machine head is the exact same, bolt-for-bolt, as the Fray milling attachment made for horizontal millers. All the company did, was to add a column and table to their head to make a light duty milling machine. Regarding the head, the casting appears rigid enough, and the overall assembly is of decent quality.

Manufactured by the Fray Machine Tool Company of 515 West Windsor Road, Glendale 4, California, the Fray "All-Angle" universal milling machine, together with a number of different vertical heads, were produced from the late 1930s to (probably) the mid 1950s.

So I am looking at getting a mill for my home shop. I found a Fray Type 4 for less than $1,000 and I am wondering if it is worth it. I know nothing about these machines so I don't know how they stack up to a used Bridgeport. The seller sent me some photos and it looks pretty dirty, and I can't tell what the actual condition is.

Re: Info on Fray 10RH Milling Machine. There really isn't much to the motor and mounting. The picture on Tony's website pretty much shows most of it. The motor is a 1750 rpm, sitting on a casting that hold it up off the mounting bolt. There are 3 bolts I think, and they are in slots so the casting can be moved to loosen and tighten the belt.

8. Apr 4, 2014. #5. Nice find! The Fray machines make for excellent hobby mills, especially with the all angle head. From what I understand, a rather common problem with them is for the back gears to be stripped out of the head. Hopefully yours are in good shape!

Fray Milling machine rebuild. Well here goes my first attempt with Photobucket. Hope it works. About 90% or more of the machine is in excellent shape. One small divot in the table, no discernible wear on the screws, very good paint, etc. However there are "issues".
