BTW, I still don't have variable speed, but I sure wish I did. But I'm glad I at least have a "slower" motor (1750 rpm as opposed to ~3600 rpm) with 3 step pullies, that way I can slow down the grinder down to a "relatively slow speed" compared to single speed direct drive grinders.

That is a DC open frame motor ( probably from a treadmill). It is a very poor choice for a grinder motor. Both the HP and the speed ratings are misleading. The HP on those things is "Rated HP", similar to 3HP routers and 5HP vacuums. The plate says it would "develop" 2HP with the motor running at 6100RPM and at 130VDC.

Re: Grinder speed control I think it can be done but you need a speed controller designed specifically for induction motors. It would likely be cheaper to buy a new grinder. Also, it's not good for the motor and could over heat it. There are speed controllers for ceiling fans which have induction motors but it's a different type of wiring then a grinder motor and it's built for that propose.
