The mini mill uses deep groove radial bearings. They're not ideal for a mill spindle, but they'll work adequately. There are essentially three options for replacement bearings: 1. Deep Groove Radial Ball Bearings (6206 for MT3 spindle) - These are the same as the stock bearings and come as either sealed or shielded.

The typical Sieg X2 mini-mill [HF 44991, Grizzly G8689, Micro-Mark & others] has a lot of backlash in the Z-axis.In my case it was .053-inches, which was almost a full turn of the fine-adjust knob. I heard that putting a shim behind the rack on the column would help by causing it to mesh tighter with the pinion gear in the head.

Few years later I got Mini Mill from Harbor Freight - a variation of Sieg X2 mill. These two machines are very good when tuned well. I was able to achieve the precision of 0.001inch what is enough for my needs. When the mill arrived to my shop it was mostly assembled but I decides to take it apart, clean, lubricate and adjust the way I wanted.

Mini Mill. My Mini Mill is a Harbor Freight 44991. It's actually a branded Sieg X2 mill. The size is ideal for the home shop - it won't kill you when you move it. It's not a bad machine, but does take some tweaking. the quirks just added motivation. Right now, it's got fully functional X and Y computer control.

The Sieg X2 Mini Mill is know for the wet noodle characteristics of the column. In particular the tilting column variation of the X2 (the most common variation) has extreme chatter and vibration issues when trying to take anything more than very small depths of cut in steel.
