I need to install new bearings on my J+S 540 surface grinder. It is a ball bearing spindle. I have imported the correct bearings from England at great expense so I don't want to mess up the job. My question is orientation re. markings on the races and spindle and what lubricant would be the correct one to use. Many thanks. Werner

So I found a used Parker Majestic cartridge spindle (motor and spindle is one long unit with no belts) made for a later model B&S No. 2 for $100.

When grinding, the best surface finishes are achieved if the tips of the abrasive particles rotate in an absolutely true circle both while dressing and while grinding.

The rolling elements of some bearings can be made of ceramics like silicon nitride Si3N4, however the bearing rings are normally steel-based.

Suitable wheel guards and tool rests are ... surface grinding, but can also be used for offhand grinding of flat surfaces. Plain or beveled faces are available.
ادامه مطلبI'm believing the bearings were bad from the start, or the motor rotor is not balanced. It may be the bearing housing is machined wrong, and there's slop. For reference, I just got 3 new grinding hubs off eBay, and independent of them, this finish was consistently the same. My tenths test indicator can't see these surface blemishes on a surface ...

ادامه مطلبEvery little thing wrong with a grinder is telegraphed onto the finished surface. This includes motor balance, tortional vibration, lumpy belts, out of balance pulleys, bum bearings, and vibrations transmitted to the machine from the floor. Thus a balanced motor and near perfect pulleys and belts are pretty much of a necessity.
