I have been a machinist for 23 years now and have access to many cnc machines along with the measuring equipment also. I know this sounds weird but all the machining centers have the linear rails so Im thinking this is the way to go,and I also think this will run alot smoother and alot less strain on the motors.But this is just what I think.

John, when I had to clear space in the garage for my Tree 325 CNC knee mill a couple years ago I sold my 9x42 Taiwan clone mill to a friend. Having the stepper motor in front of the machines adds about 8 inches to the front of the machine. Mounting the steppers to the rear of the machine only adds 3 inches to the rear.
