Going back a few months, I was going to do the same trick you propose and mount a Brigdeport head. I have the variable speed 2J Bridgeport head that is in good condition. It came off of a tracer mill so it has the flat mounting flange at the rear of the head with four attachment bolt holes that make it a breeze to adapt to other mills.

I would get the style with the reversable top jaws. Last week I fitted a 5" Union 3 jaw chuck to a 1" thick steel mounting plate for my home shop.I first turned a locating boss on the plate (could be OD bored on a mill) to mount the chuck then drilled holes to match the table pattern on my XLO mill.
