Sep 12, 2013. #1. That 2 manuals I have found for my south bend vertical mill (vintage 1960s) cover adjusting belts and operating all the different wheels and knobs... but no info on how to change the belt. I did find another manual that identifys all the parts and their placement (vintagemachinery).

There is a cover on the bottom of the drive motor. Remove this. Then you use a couple of screws (long 1/4-20 maybe) to compress the spring for the motor variable pitch sheave. When you have the spring compressed (sheave open wide) you can remove the bolts holding the motor. You have to tilt the motor to get the belt to clear the lower sheave half.

My Chevalier milling machine took a hard hit today now the head is making noise. Is there anyone on here that might be able to help me fix this or send me to someone who can. Man I hate that I tore this think up. I love my milling machine. This thing was so smooth and quit.

Replace the motor standoffs / isolators and set the belt tension to Haas specifications. Test the belt for incorrect tracking in both the clockwise and counterclockwise directions. If the incorrect tracking continues, flip the belt over and install the belt. If the incorrect tracking continues in the opposite direction, replace the belt.
