Grease is only recommend for the. bearings (spindle and thrust) on the mill. Vactra #2 Way Oil is a good choice. for these mills. The "crossfeed" nut is already a split nut (this is the feed that moves the saddle. in and out from the column). There isn't any adjustment to remove backlash for. the table feed screw.

It was taken over in 1948 by Smith & Mills Co. They were also known as U.S.-Burke Machine Tool Co. Better known for their inexpensive Millrite milling machines, they also made an early machinists' drill press. From Canadian Machinery. Parts for Burke milling machines were formerly available from D. C. Morrison Co., but no longer.

They assume the buyer or operator is familiar with the basics of a vertical mill, and the Millrite was about as basic as they come. All else you need is maintenance info and a parts list. Take a look at the manuals for a Bridgeport or a Tree or any other common mill, the manual is pretty sparse.

After I bought it I was looking at the pictures a little closer and realized that the model I have coming has the 13" crossfeed capability. Atmus! Ugh! I just replaced them in my Millrite. The 19150's (class 3) were $120.63 each and the 19268's (class 3) were $65.36 each.

A Millrite is about 3/4 Bridgeport size, weighing about 1100 lbs. and generally costing $1000 up. The #4 is about half as big and runs about half as much in cost. It's a LOT easier to move around than the Millrite. But the travel is limited to maybe 4" in-out and maybe 10" side-to-side.
